Lewis and Clark, Clark and Lewis!

For his final act in 5th grade, Alex starred (well, not really) in a musical.

For these last 3 posts, going back and watching Alex in 5th grade has been amazing.  I had almost forgotten all about his tics,  his fidgeting, and his willingness to try just about anything!  I am glad I have all these memories, and I am glad I am able to share them with all of you.

Spelling Bee!

When Alex was in 5th grade, he won his school's spelling bee.

Alex went on to the next level of competition.  He was, again, nervous.

He made it through the first round of the spelling bee.

But alas, it was not meant to be.

This was an interesting word for Alex to not get because he definitely has a way with pacification.  He has always been a kind, sweet kid.

5th Grade

Alexander had another prolific year in 5th grade.  The first event was his winter concert.  You can always pick out Alexander because he's always the tallest kid (and the most fidgety!).

Hot Chocolate

Jingle Bell Rock w/ Alex on violin

The next event for Alex was African Drumming.  Alex seemed a little nervous about this event.

But I think he did a great job!

My Favorite Stories!

In my last post, I introduced you to my son, the author.  In this post, I’m going to share with you some of my favorite stories Alex wrote.

One of my favorite stories of my son's I love because it reminds me of how Alex was when he was 7 and 8 years old.  Alex used to be very scared of loud noises:  “I am fritened of loud noises.  I am fritened because It hurts my ears.  I be brave by pluging my ears. “  When he was in Kindergarten, his classroom’s fire alarm was covered with a thick muffling device, simply because Alex would freak out if it went off.

Another favorite story is: “Something I do at home.  I am inchrested about coins.  and I have a book about coins.”  I love this story because it reminds me of the funny ways kids talk when they are young.

Another two stories I loved, that shared a common theme, were these: “If I were president.  I would help people.  I would help them very much.  I would help them with doors that are stuck. “ and “{This was a fill in the blank story.}  If I Were President-I I were President, the first thing I would do is:  Help people with stuck doors.  If I were President, I would eat:  everything.  If I were President, I would travel:  arond the earth.  If I were President, I would have a pet:  Lion (named) Roar.  If I were President, I would pass a law that:  is do not chew on bones.  If I were President, I would help:  the planets.”  I love this story because it makes me wonder why my son, at 8 years old, was so fascinated with stuck doors.

I love this story because it is so true, and it just makes me laugh: “One day my kitten Anna ran to me and scrached me.  It hurt but it ditin't bleed.  I went to show my mom my scrach and then she showed me her scrach."

And finally, my favorite story Alex ever wrote I love because, well, you can probably guess:  “Alfred is a baby golden Retriever.  Rex digs the hole deep.  Then Alfred go's on Rex's side.  Rex sais "lets be loveable"."

Alexander

In first grade, my now 16-year-old son was an accomplished author and illustrator.  He wasn't very picky about his subjects.

He wrote stories with an epicurean flair:
"Cinamin roles are delicious.  Cinamin roles are the bestest desert in the world.  The best part of the cinamin Roles is the frosting." and "I like winter.  Winter is fun for me.  I like the snow.  I like to build a snowman.  I like to go sledding with my cousent.  We will have hot chocklite after I'm done.  I like marshmellows in my hot chocklite.  Then I will play something inside."

He was a sports reporter:
"I played soccer at marril park.  It was fun.  I loved it.  It was like a camp.  It happend 5 days.  It was last week.  Soccer is the bestest sport in the United States.  Soccor dosin't have bases.  Soccor dosin't have hoops.  Soccor has goals."

He wrote serials:
"I have someone named superman.  For real, he is real.  He lets me wear his shirt.  Noboty know his powers ec.t me.  He lives on land outside.  He lives with his famley.  They live in the South Pole.  They live on the ice They live with pengiuns.  Superman and his famaly" and "Once upon a time there was a dolphin.  The dolphin had 1,000,000 legs.  So he can walk on land.  He has 100 ears.  His famely had 1 leg.  His name is Superman."

He wrote biographical pieces, often involving his cats:
"I like to jump in puddels.  I like reading, I like playing, and drawing.  These are some of the best things to do on rainy days." and "My cats make me happy.  I love them.  I like it when they sleep with me.  Sometimes Anna likes to sleep on the couch with me wile I lie down on the couch." and "I was in my room with my kitten Panda.  Panda is a kitten.  She is Black and white.  She is 1 foot long.  She likes to sleep.  Panda likes to rub her head on my hand."

He wrote stories about complex subjects:
"There once was a talking math book.  He sais 2+2=3.  He sais 1+1=-2.  The kids are so happy they are lauing.  The teacher sais his math is right.  She sais He can go out and fly.  His name is book." and "I feel exited about Second grade.  I,m exited because I will be doing harder math.  Second grade will be fun.  I know Second grade will be fun.  I will know multiplicatan"

He wrote fashion reviews:

"I like my batman shirt."

He also wrote stories that made no sense:
"Do you know what a wall is?  It is a animal.  It's made of Bricks.  Geuss what is made of steel and meadel.  If you geuss the legs are steel you are right.  If you guess the head is meadal you are right.  It can pick up the earth.  It is bigger then the whole space.  I can eat a planet.  It is bigger then an elephent."

In my next post, I'll share with you my absolute favorite stories that Alexander wrote in first grade.
